Lingon is a rice with evergreen leathery leaves and red berries. Lingonberry is called Vaccinium vitis-idaea in Latin. The leaves have curved edges, the upper side is shiny green and the underside is pale green with glandular dots. The lingonberry blooms in May-July, the flowers are bell-shaped, white or light pink and sit in bunches. The shiny and bright red berries ripen in August-September and have been used in Swedish cooking since time immemorial. The berries have a preservative effect due to their high content of benzoic acid. In the past, they were even used as preservatives for other jams and marmalades.

The berries are used for drinks, jams and jellies. They do not need to be preserved as they have a long shelf life due to their high content of benzoic acid. Therefore only uses a little raw cane sugar and no preservatives. Despite the fact that the opposite is often stated in the literature, the vitamin C content in lingonberries is low. In the past, the berries, Baccæ vitis idææ, were sold at the pharmacy as, among other things, antipyretics.

"The lingonberry is an evergreen rice. The berries of the lingonberry, also called lingonberry, are edible and ripen in August–September. Lingonberry plants are rarely cultivated and the berries are often picked from wild plants. The lingonberry is a popular fruit in northern Europe, especially in Scandinavia , where everyone is allowed to pick them in the forest, thanks to the common law. The berries that have not become overripe can be picked with berry pickers. The berries are generally boiled and sugared before being eaten as jam, juice, compote or jelly. They can also be served raw, which means that they are crushed and mixed with sugar. Thanks to its high content of benzoic acid, the shelf life of the products is high even with a low sugar content. Traditionally, lingonberries are served with game, small Swedish meatballs, black pudding, body cakes and pork pancakes. Regionally, lingonberries are served with fried stromming and flatfish. Lingonberries are included in various cakes and breads as well as sauces and desserts. ( Wikipedia )"
